CentOS 6.5 was released this December and is available for downloading in both 32 and 64-bit architecture. This operating system comes with a bug fixer and is based on EL 6.5. Those who already have CentOS 6.4 can upgrade to 6.5 by ‘yum update’. The major updates done in this system include precision time protocol, openSSL updated to version 1.0.1, read-only support of VMDK- and VHDX-Files, CPU updated to virt-v2v-/virt-p2v-conversion tools, updated Hyper-V and VMware drives and updates to evolution and Libre office.

Downloading CentOS 6.5

To install CentOS 60.5 you first need to download it. Start by clicking on any two below given Link or Link

You will reach a window having three options ‘parent directory’, ‘i386/’ and ‘x86_64/’. Click on any of the last two options a list containing multiple links will open. This is called mirror list. Click on any link and download torrent file. These different download links gives different options such as minimal installer which will install CentOS 6.5 with minimum software applications and a shell, LiveCD/Live DVD  for desktop and gui installer, DvD1+2 for complete applications set and Netinstaller.

Start by booting the system. The boot menu will look like following window.

Select boot option with the help of arrow down key and press enter. This will take you to desktop having an option ‘install to hard drive’. Double click on it.

This will direct you to installation wizard who will ask about keyboard layout, storage type which is ‘basic storage’ for local hard drives, host name, time zone and root password. Then comes option of formatting select ‘custom layout’ if you want to format drive yourself otherwise select first option to let an automated formatting to continue. Now the process of copying file will commence. All you have to do is sit and wait until this installation wizard finishes its work.

Post installation Settings

Once the installation is done a welcome wizard will show on the screen for further configuration. It will look like following

Accept license agreement then create a user account which will enable you to use your operating system. Next is setting up date and time, once you are done click forward and a last window asking you to enable kdump will come up. Enabling it is recommended. After this system will reboot itself and login screen will be displayed.

  • If you want to install CentOS 6.5 with Netinstaller the boot window which will show up, will be a little different.

  • Select the first option ‘install or upgrade existing system’ and press enter this will show a black widow like following.

  • Then a message will show asking if you want to test installation media. You can accept or skip it as per choice.

  • Then following window will show select URL and press enter.

  • Now select a suitable URL from the mirror list and paste it on URL setup and click on ok.

  • Then following window will show up next.

  • After this the process is similar as in Live CD method.
